The Education of a Pilot

Have you ever wanted to be a pilot? There are a lot of schools out there ready to teach you in both the classroom and the air. Plane and helicopter pilots are typically well educated and are able to fill a lot of roles. Two pilots usually travel on flights unless the plane is very small.

The captain is usually the most skilled pilot and is in charge of all other members of the crew. The pilot and co-pilot, usually called the first officer, share flying and other duties. These jobs also entail coordinating with air traffic controllers and monitoring instruments for faults or issues.

Now, since new engineering on aircraft can execute numerous jobs that a 3rd pilot was once employed to complete, additional pilots are no longer needed.

Prior to actual flight, pilots program their flights carefully. They also ensure that baggage or cargo is being loaded properly. Takeoff and landing are some of the most complicated parts of the job and need close coordination among the pilot and first officer with the rest of the crew.

Unless the weather is poor, the flight is generally a programed trip. Pilots and first officers commonly alternate flying every leg from takeoff to landing to remain alert and avoid exhaustion.

With autopilot support, the flight management individual computer, the plane travels a designated route and is watched by air traffic control because it passes a wide variety of terminals.

While flying is not as physical as many other blue collar jobs, the mental strain of being responsible for lives and expensive cargo can be exhausting. Pilots need to always be alert and ready to jump into action, especially during takeoff and landing. Dealing with security and the terminal layout can also be a physical drain on both pilots and passengers alike.

To be a pilot you must have an airline transport pilots license. To apply you should be at least 23 and have at least 1500 hours of flight time.
